Latonero led CCLP’s technology and human trafficking initiative, launched in 2010 in coordination with the U.S. Department of State. The initiative investigated technologies for counter-trafficking efforts and involved partnerships across private and public sectors including collaborations with the US Department of Justice, USAID and Microsoft Research. Under a grant from the Annenberg Program on Online Communities, Latonero and his research team authored a major report on Human Trafficking Online in 2011. A second report on the role of mobile in technology facilitated trafficking was published in 2012. A third report on technology and labor trafficking in a network society was published in 2015.

In partnership with the USC Information Sciences Institute (ISI), Latonero researched and developed technologies that disrupt the social dynamics of the trafficking trade and that leverage real-time data to provide actionable information for counter-trafficking efforts. The CCLP and ISI team were also awarded a 2012 Zumberge Interdisciplinary Grant from the James H. Zumberge Research and Innovation Fund.

Latonero serves on a National Academy of Science and Institute of Medicine committee to study the commercial sexual exploitation of children in the U.S. He was a member of the California Attorney General’s working group on human trafficking.
