Klein Co-Authors New Paper on Entrepreneurial Journalism Education
CCLP executive in residence Jeffrey S. Klein and visiting CCLP researcher María José Vázquez Schaich published a paper in Observatorio Journal titled "Entrepreneurial journalism education: where are we now?" The study investigated how entrepreneurial skills are taught in journalism schools around the globe, exploring trends in the courses' objectives, the challenges faced by lecturers, and how these pioneering courses are integrated into each school's curriculum. Klein and Vázquez have worked together in the past to write a case study examining the viability of online community news sites. For example, Pew reports that in the week after the Japanese tsunami, the top 20 YouTube videos on the disaster were viewed 96 million times. Copps offers rebuttal to FCC report on the future of news
WASHINGTON — Federal Communications Commission member Michael J. Copps is calling for reinvigorated federal regulation of broadcasting to encourage more, and more serious journalism. Expanding on his June 9 remarks following the release of the FCC's staff report on the information needs of communities, Copps criticized the report's optimism about the Internet. "What we have gained on the Internet," said Copps (pictured left), "does not match what we have lost" due to cutbacks in newspaper and broadcast newsrooms. WASHINGTON — The Federal Communications Commission will propose a new "streamlined web system" regulatory regime for broadcasters, requiring licensees to file all information on the Internet in a publicly accessible and searchable form. Landmark FCC Report highlights CCLP research
For its new report assessing the national and local media landscape and offering policy recommendations on how to preserve the public's access to news and information, the Federal Communications Commission appointed award-winning journalist and CCLP Senior Fellow Cinny Kennard to the working group that led research, conducted interviews and drafted the document. FCC chairman Julius Genachowski publicly thanked Kennard in his remarks at the FCC meeting in Washington D.C. on June 9. Smith in USC News – “Black Characters”
According to a study performed by Faculty Fellow Stacy Smith, Hollywood movies directed by African Americans are significantly more likely to include African-American characters with speaking roles than movies not directed by African Americans. The report, co-authored by project administrator Marc Choueiti, also found that only one of the top 200 movies from 2007 and 2008 was directed by an African-American woman, according to the "Black Characters" report. "Black Characters" also quantifies the continuing, although slightly diminished, sexualization of black female movie roles versus black male movie roles. [Full article]……
