The USC Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership & Policy (CCLP) is delighted to welcome Craig Calhoun as its newest Senior Fellow. A former Director of the London School of Economics and the first President of the Berggruen Institute, Calhoun joins a cohort of CCLP senior fellows who are at the forefront of journalism, public diplomacy, civic technology, politics, and communications fields.
“As one of the world’s leading figures in the effort to find the nexus between academic research and public policy, Craig brings both intellectual heft and practical experience to CCLP,” said CCLP’s Director, Geoffrey Cowan. “We are thrilled to have him on our team.”
Calhoun, who is now a University Professor at the University of Arizona and a Senior Advisor to the Berggruen Institute, was a University Professor of the Social Sciences at New York University and Director of NYU’s Institute for Public Knowledge. He spent 13 years as the President of the Social Science Research Council.
A USC alumnus, Calhoun received master’s degrees from Columbia University and Manchester University and a doctorate from Oxford University. He is the author of several books including The Roots of Radicalism (2012) and Neither Gods nor Emperors (1994), and the former editor of two scholarly journals, Social Theory and Comparative Social Research.
Calhoun is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Einstein Fellow at the City of Berlin, and the elected President of the International Institute of Sociology.
