Media Ownership and the Public Interest
The USC Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership and Policy and the New America Foundation’s Media Policy Initiative invite you to a conversation on media ownership and the public interest. The Federal Communications Commission’s proposed change of media ownership rules has once again stirred debate in Washington. At issue is whether to relax the ban on mergers between a newspaper and a TV station in the same market. On one side, those in favor of the change say that allowing the weaker TV stations in the top 20 markets to merge with newspapers is hardly a radical move, and that it might actually improve news viability in those markets. On the other side, opponents argue that there is too much media consolidation as it is now. They point to ample evidence that greater consolidation will constrain the already limited opportunities for entry in many markets. There are more than two sides to the argument. Some question the value of debating regulations on what they consider to be the dinosaurs of old media, and seek an updated approach to contemporary media regulations. Still others caution that we lack sufficient research to understand the impact of the proposed rule change on the public interest goals of competition, localism and diversity.

TOP SECRET IN CHINA: How Did the Chinese React to Geoffrey Cowan’s Play About The Pentagon Papers, Free Press and an Independent Judiciary?
What secrets do governments need to keep? What if the secret is that the government mislead the public about an important issue? Do news organizations have the right, do they have the responsibility to bring such a secret to public attention? In some instances co-author Geoffrey Cowan, former dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, and the play’s producer, director, and performers were able to talk with audiences about the issues addressed in the play. In some places, Chinese authorities sought to prevent such discussions. Please join us on Thursday, February 2 when Cowan, executive producer Susan Loewenberg, and actor Joshua Stamberg will discuss how they managed to take Top Secret to China, how it was presented to Chinese audiences, and how the play was received. Internet Advocacy Roundtable: Tapping Into the Millennial Momentum
In 2008, Morley Winograd and Michael Hais’s Millennial Makeover explored how the Millennial generation was reshaping American politics, in part, by forcing older generations to embrace social media channels for political communications. Now the authors are back, with a new book (Millennial Momentum) exploring how Millennials are transforming other areas of American culture and a return visit to the Center for American Progress Action Fund’s Internet Advocacy Roundtable. Join us as we partner with Center for American Progress’s Progressive Studies Program and Campus Progress to explore the best way to reach Millennials via social media and what messages they are most likely to hear. Tapping into the Millennial momentum requires an understanding of the generation’s civic-orientation. In order to mobilize them, we must use social media to deliver messages that speak to their sense of civic responsibility. Our moderator, Ruy Teixeira, whose own research on Millennials is quite extensive, and Angela Peoples, who is using social media to connect with Millennials through her work at Campus Progress, round out the panel to provide us with a fascinating deep dive into the minds of the Millennial generation.

Road to the White House 2012: Texas vs. California – Economic Myths and Reality
The USC Annenberg School’s Center on Communication Leadership and Policy (CCLP) presents a discussion on the 2012 elections, featuring CCLP Senior Fellow Narda Zacchino, who is currently working on a book about California that focuses on the oft-made comparisons between California and Texas. Joining her will be Annenberg Professor and Truthdig Editor Robert Scheer. Narda has written: “The emergence of Texas Gov. Rick Perry as the frontrunner for the GOP nomination for president has invited invidious comparisons with Democratic-controlled California, as Texas, with its lower unemployment rate and job growth, appears to be in better economic shape than the Golden State. Perry supporters offer this as an argument for Republican leadership in Washington. But a closer examination of the facts renders a mixed verdict on the success and failings of both states, and some surprising reasons why Texas has not suffered as much as California in the national recession.”

Declining state support coupled with the poor U.S. economy, stations face even larger total cuts.” CCLP director Geoffrey Cowan will offer welcoming remarks.

Annenberg Research Seminar: Tom Hollihan
Join students and faculty as we kick off the weekly Annenberg Research Seminar series with a presentation by communication professor and CCLP Faculty Fellow Tom Hollihan. His topic: “Barack Obama and the debate on health care reform: Dialogic argument vs. the politics of resistance.” From Dr. Hollihan: “Barack Obama promised to bring “hope” and “change” to the nation. He offered more than policy changes, he would change the practice of politics and would engage citizens and their elected officials alike in discussions aimed at discovering solutions to our shared problems. But in his most significant legislative initiative, the attempt to reform health care, Obama faced a GOP leadership that refused to engage in dialogue and instead opposed him at every opportunity. This strategy of opposition capitalized on the public’s fears and anxieties. It also significantly contributed to increasing public cynicism and distrust of government. This strategy demonstrated a lack of civic virtue and has the potential to cause significant long term harm to our democracy.”

From Publisher’s Weekly: “In this modest, fluent bio, part of the American Presidents Series, former Democratic senator and presidential nominee McGovern finds an inspiring lesson in what a man can do with his life. McGovern’s Lincoln is a smart, ambitious striver who overcame humble origins, repeated setbacks and spells of depression. He is an idealist who, though burdened with the racial prejudices of his day, embraced the principle of equal opportunity. Most resonantly for the author, he is a brilliant politician who, combining pragmatism with high purpose, steered a crooked course through ugly political realities to end the intractable curse of slavery.” Professor Scheer and Senator McGovern will make brief remarks.

His topic: “A Catholic approach to American public life.” He writes: “A review of different understandings of secularization suggests that the U.S., in fact, can be called a ‘post-secular’ society, preeminently and irreversibly secular in some respects, intensely religious in others. But what does this in turn mean for American public life and specifically for its politics? How should religious traditions, organizations and leaders speak to questions with profound moral implications, from war and economic security to healthcare and abortion. Should they be politically “bilingual”—addressing the faithful with one language and the general citizenry with another? What is needed is a new ethic of ‘post-secular citizenship’ involving both religious literacy and enlarged sensibilities on the part of believers and non-believers.” He is the author of A People Adrift : The Crisis of the Roman Catholic Church in America. Book signing follows discussion. This program is co-sponsored by the USC Office of Religious Life, USC Annenberg’s Knight Chair in Media and Religion and USC’s Center for Religion and Civic Culture.
