Following President Donald Trump’s executive order to reduce the U.S. Agency for Global Media’s operations, CCLP Director Geoffrey Cowan published an op-ed on March 19 in the Los Angeles Times in support of Voice of America (VOA), which has been defunded. His op-ed explores the unprecedented silencing of VOA after 83 years of broadcasting. Cowan was the director of Voice of America under the Clinton Administration (1994-1996).
In his op-ed, Cowan discusses how halting VOA’s dissemination of news and American values worldwide has been met with approval from U.S. adversaries, from China to Russia. The article underscores VOA’s historical role in promoting democracy and providing reliable information globally and expresses concern over the implications of its eerie silence.
